BERNARD LEO REMAKUS, M.D. is a native of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He received his B.S. degree from King’s College in 1970, M.Ed. degree from East Stroudsburg State College in 1972, and M.D. degree from the Temple University School of Medicine in 1978. He completed a three-year residency in internal medicine at Abington Memorial Hospital, which led to his certification as a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Dr. Remakus has practiced internal medicine in a physician-shortage area of rural Susquehanna County Pennsylvania for more than 41 years. During that time, he has published five novels – The Paraclete, Keystone, Cassidy’s Solution, Mia; and The Lame Duck; three works of non-fiction – The Malpractice Epidemic: A Layman’s Guide To Medical Malpractice, Medicine From The Heart, and Medicine Between The Lines; one screenplay – Mia, and one book of poetry – Superstar. His novels, The Lame Duck and The Paraclete, have won multiple book awards.
The publisher of 221 East Publishing, Dr. Remakus has also authored more than 200 scientific articles that have been published in: The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Newsweek, Medical Economics, The Archives of Internal Medicine, Internal Medicine News, Consultant, Geriatrics, Modern Medicine, Medical World News, Hospital News, The American Magazine, Pride, KevinMD and Internal Medicine World Report. Many of these articles have been reprinted in popular newspapers and magazines.
From 1991 to 2002, Dr. Remakus was the featured columnist and a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the medical publication, Internal Medicine World Report. His column in that publication had the distinction of being one of the most widely-read and longest-running physician-written columns in America.
When not practicing medicine or writing, Dr. Remakus serves as a professional speaker. In previous years, he has served as an Assistant Professor at the Health Science Center of the State University of New York and Temple University School of Medicine. He has also been a hospital chief of staff, emergency room director, clinical drug researcher, medical examiner and consultant.
During his teaching career, Dr. Remakus taught at the high school, college and medical school levels. One of his high school chemistry students later became one of his medical school students.
Recognized by the publication, Collegiate Baseball, as “the only medical doctor in the United States to serve as head coach of a high school varsity baseball team,” Dr. Remakus coached the Blue Ridge High School baseball team in New Milford, Pa. from 1993 to 1998. During that period of time, his teams made four post-season district playoff appearances and won the Lackawanna League Northern Division-Two championship in 1998.
While coaching at Blue Ridge, Dr. Remakus was instrumental in helping more than a dozen high school baseball, softball, basketball and volleyball players obtain athletic, academic and financial need scholarships at Division-One, Two and Three colleges and universities. He also provided generous yearly financial support to several county athletic programs, and helped a number of high school baseball players get tryouts with major league teams.
A recipient of the 2020 “Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award,” Dr. Remakus has been named to every edition of America’s Top Physicians since 2003. He is listed in multiple “Who’s Who” publications, including: Who’s Who in the World, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who’s Who in Science and Engineering, and Who’s Who in American Education.
Dr. Remakus and his wife, Charlotte, have been married for 47 years. Their three children, Chris, Ali, and Matt, are all physicians. Their son-in-law, Mark, is also a physician, and their daughter-in-law, Sanda, is a Ph.D. in medical microbiology. Dr. and Mrs. Remakus have four grandchildren, Jake, Betsy, Anabelle, and Charlie.
