An Author Interview is Not About the Book by Pat Rullo
interviewing an author
not probing for book details
but essence within
When we think of authors, we often think of their books, plot lines, or writing style. However, an author interview is an opportunity to delve deeper into the person behind the book. Authors are humans with stories to tell, and their stories are often hidden behind their books, which serve as a medium for them to express themselves and share their ideas.
Sure, it’s essential to know what the author’s book is about, but you can find that information on the back cover of their book or check out Amazon reviews. As the conversation host, it is more important for me to dig deeper to find out and share who the person is as a human, what they believe in, and what inspires them. An author interview is an invitation to enter their world, and it’s an opportunity for readers and fans to gain insight into the soul behind the words.
One of the advantages of focusing on the author rather than the book is that it gives us a peek into their creative process. The questions asked during an author interview can provide a better understanding of how the author creates their world, how they develop their characters, and what their writing routine looks like. This knowledge can offer aspiring writers a glimpse into what it takes to become a successful writer.
Another crucial aspect of understanding an author’s essence is that it allows readers to connect with the author personally, foster a relationship – even from afar, and challenge preconceived notions about them and their work.
After interviewing an author, I often read all their books – books I probably would not have picked up had I randomly seen the covers online or at a bookstore. Why? Because now I ‘feel’ the person behind the words. Their essence draws me closer to them, and I want to know more.
