Wonderfully You: An Ode to Adoption

Our “we” was once three
with hearts’ room for more.
Our journey began
to turn three into four.
We filled out some forms
and sent them away,
excited for when
you’d join us one day.
Your name was chosen,
whether girl or a boy –
a name we loved
for a bringer of joy.
We readied your room,
put paint on the wall,
and planned for the day
when we’d get a call.
So long we waited
and waited some more.
We nearly gave up,
it was hard to endure.
But life had a plan
that could not be rushed,
and love found a way
to connect you to us.
One day, unexpected,
our phone rang and rang.
“She’s hear, she’s born!”
a case worker sang.
With joy, we shouted,
“We’ll leave right away!” –
eager to meet you
the very next day.
We packed up our things,
some diapers and clothes.
Soon, we would hold you
and kiss your small toes.
We drove through the night
to a town far away.
Our hearts were so full;
love had found us that day.
The next morning, we met
both you and your mom.
We hugged and we kissed you;
in our arms, you were calm.
Your mom loved you more
than you’ll ever know;
She chose us to love you
and help you to grow.
From the very first day
and every day after,
you’ve brought so much joy
and days filled with laughter.
You’re so quick to learn,
each day something new;
with every new skill,
we grow prouder of you.
Our family’s complete;
our three is now four,
and love fills our home
more than ever before.
And as you get older,
with all that you’ll do,
remember you’re loved
‘cause you’re wonderfully you.
