George Hopkins is a former United States Marine Corps Sergeant who served on active duty during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He was Chairperson of English at a high school designated as a national school of excellence, and has taught at St. John’s University, Middlesex College, Columbia Teachers College and in Puerto Rico. He was twice named “Teacher of the Year” by the New York Association of Teachers. For his work in coordinating a Senior Citizens’ Poetry Contest and Festival on Staten Island over the past fourteen years, he was honored by NY 1 as a “New Yorker of the Week.” Hopkins has led writing workshops for Poets and Writers, the Noble Maritime Museum, and the Community Agency for Senior Citizens and has won awards for poetry, writing, community service, and television production. Hopkins, who was born in Brooklyn, NY and raised in the Bronx, lives on Staten Island with his wife. He is the father of four children and the grandfather of ten.
