Writers Giving Up Too Soon by Pat Rullo
Writing is a beautiful art form allowing individuals to express and share their thoughts and emotions with the world, but it can be challenging and demanding. It’s not uncommon for aspiring writers to give up their dreams after facing rejection and criticism from publishers or peers. Unfortunately, this act of giving up too soon is all too familiar in the writing community, leading to a loss of talent and potential.
One of the primary reasons why writers give up is the fear of failure. The fear of not being good enough or not being successful enough can be crippling. This fear is often compounded by negative feedback and rejection from publishers and peers. However, it’s essential, but not always easy, to remember that rejection and criticism are a natural part of the writing process and do not reflect one’s worth or talent. I know – easy to say but not easy to conquer.
Another reason writers give up too soon is a lack of patience and perseverance. Writing is not a quick and easy process. Developing the skills and experience necessary to craft compelling stories and engaging characters takes time, effort, and dedication. Often, writers expect instant success and recognition, leading them to become discouraged and give up when things take longer than planned.
I am one of those impatient sorts, so I prefer to write nonfiction, where I can get to the point quickly. I am a ‘tell, not show’ kind of person, so character development for me would be daunting. I admire those who have patience when creating a storyline with unforgettable characters.
Writers also need to develop a thick skin and the ability to accept criticism. Writing is a subjective art form, and not everyone will like or appreciate the work. It’s essential to take criticism constructively and use it to improve and grow. That takes a conscious effort. My initial reaction to criticism is to get annoyed. But I’ve practiced and learned to stop that feeling, step back, and evaluate the feedback. I can’t tell you how proud I am when I can do that and incorporate the suggested changes without irritation.
Finally, the writing community can play a significant role in helping aspiring writers overcome the obstacles that lead them to give up too soon. Mentorship, support, and encouragement from peers and seasoned writers can help to boost confidence, increase skills, and provide the necessary motivation to keep writing. Don’t hesitate to reach out to fellow authors and ask for support. The author community is generally an open and accepting group.
Giving up too soon is a prevalent issue in the writing world. If any of this reminds you of yourself, realize it’s possible to rekindle your passion and start writing again. With support from the community and dedication to the craft, you can achieve your goals and share your stories with the world.
